Dealing With Pain, Loss, and Hurt

A friend of mine recently asked me how I deal with the loss of my dear father, because she had suffered the same loss not so long ago. This was what my heart gave to hers…

The days…the ones where you just wanna go some place familiar…some place you shared with your daddy..and you just wanna cry…..

Do it. Don’t fight it. Don’t run from it. Don’t try to find things, and people, and events, and noise to hide it.
Sit with it. Hold it. Let it hurt.
Brave and stronger are those of us who can sit with our pain and loss and say: “You are a part of my story. I will not deny your space, nor your memory, nor your affect on my life. I will sit with you because I will learn from you. And when I get up from this place and our meeting today is done, I will be better because I will know more about me…and pain…and compassion than I did before.”

  1. Vonnie,
Thank you for sharing. Thank you for giving us permission (not that we really need it), to grieve…it just feels good to know that other people express their grief this way. And it is healthy to be honest and just let it happen.
